Relic Entertainment developed the original Company of Heroes as a World War 2 real-time strategy game heavily influenced by Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. Principal programmer Ian Thomson noted that the team wanted to bring the visual and physics leaps of titles like Half-Life 2 into the genre. The original prototype was created using the engine from the 2003 real-time strategy game Impossible Creatures. To humanize the battlefield, the development team focused on audio, animations, cover systems, and squad morale, making soldiers feel distinct on the screen.

Principal programmer Remy Saville recalled that the team pushed for extensive features including destructible environments and squad tactics. Company of Heroes shipped as the highest-rated real-time strategy game in PC Gamer history with a score of 96, followed by expansions Opposing Fronts in 2007 and Tales of Valor in 2009. Discussions for a sequel moved the setting to the Eastern Front, resulting in Company of Heroes 2 in 2013. The sequel introduced environmental mechanics such as frostbite for infantry left in the cold and destructible frozen lakes that could sink tanks.

While Company of Heroes 2 received a score of 80 in PC Gamer reviews, it faced a mixed response from the competitive multiplayer community regarding its new gameplay systems. The franchise later expanded with the 2014 release of Ardennes Assault, which featured a dynamic map simulating the Battle of the Bulge, voiced commanders, and reactive campaign artificial intelligence. Throughout its history, the franchise has remained a cornerstone of real-time strategy gaming while navigating creative risks and shifts in design.
