Red Dead Redemption Multiplayer Launched With So Many Bugs, Lead Dev Thought Rockstar Was Being Hacked
Lead multiplayer designer Kris Roberts shared how chaotic the 2010 launch of Red Dead Redemption's online mode was, prompting panic, wacky glitches, and a quick-fix deployment while he was on jury duty.
When Red Dead Redemption launched in 2010, the open-world game's multiplayer mode arrived in a severely broken state. According to lead multiplayer designer Kris Roberts in an interview with Kiwi Talkz, the initial release was so buggy that it sparked fears of outside cyberattacks or extensive trolling within the studio.
Reflecting on the pre-launch period, Roberts described entering an amnesiac state of severe sleep deprivation. Just as the game shipped, he was assigned to jury duty for a criminal case while hoping to enjoy some compensated time off. Instead, he found himself managing court obligations by day and staring at bizarre glitches across the American frontier during 3 AM sessions. Players were encountering strange sights, such as individuals riding chickens and old ladies flying around—anomalies the development team had never anticipated.
The chaos stemmed from resource-heavy special assets tied to competitive games: bags of gold. Developers discovered that players could somehow exit a competitive match while holding a money bag, carrying it over into public free-roam sessions where it did not belong. These misplaced items consumed system resources to such an extent that regular game logic and scripting failed to function properly.
To combat the issue, programmer Jeremy Tudisco of the Rockstar New England team developed a script designed to purge those specific assets from free roam entirely. Tudisco even tied the script's execution to the sound of a slot machine payout for added satisfaction. Thanks to the architecture of Xbox 360 and PS3 development kits, which utilized title storage intended for tournament notifications, the team bypassed lengthy testing and patch approval processes. They deployed Tudisco's script directly into public sessions within 24 hours without standard oversight.
With the emergency fix successfully implemented, Roberts was able to report the solution to studio leadership before returning to his criminal case jury duties the following morning.
