PlayStation 6 and Xbox Helix Chips Reportedly Taped Out, Pointing to Late 2027 Launch

According to hardware leaker KeplerL2, the processors for Sony's PS6 and Microsoft's Xbox Helix have completed their design phase and entered production. The reported specs suggest significant performance jumps over current-generation consoles.

Sony and Microsoft have reportedly reached a major production milestone with their next-generation consoles. According to known hardware leaker KeplerL2, the chips for the PlayStation 6 and Xbox Helix have been taped out, meaning their final designs are complete and sent to manufacturers for production.

When a chip is taped out, the design phase is essentially finished. Major changes become unlikely unless manufacturers discover a significant design flaw during production. This step typically signals that a console is on track for its planned launch window.

The reported specifications suggest substantial performance increases. KeplerL2 claims the PS6 will deliver 40 teraflops of compute performance, while the Xbox Helix will reach 56 teraflops. For context, the PlayStation 5 Pro features 16.7 teraflops, the base PS5 has 10.28, the Xbox Series X has 12, and the Xbox Series S has 4.

Teraflops measure a console's raw theoretical computing power and polygon rendering capability. However, raw teraflops don't directly translate to practical performance. Other factors including architecture, memory bandwidth, and software optimization determine how well each system actually performs in real-world gaming.

Beyond raw compute power, KeplerL2 noted that the PS6 is expected to deliver 12 times faster ray tracing performance and AI compute capabilities 50 to 70 times faster than the PS5. These improvements would address both visual fidelity and increasingly AI-driven gaming features.

The tapeout suggests both consoles remain on schedule for a rumored late 2027 launch. However, neither Sony nor Microsoft has officially confirmed launch dates or specifications. Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki mentioned last month that PS6 launch plans remain undecided due to global memory shortages, though previous statements from both companies have pointed toward 2027.

Microsoft Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirmed in August that the company has been "hard at work on a great next generation and a great family of devices for Project Helix," adding that it will "push the boundaries of performance" and play both console and PC games. Affordability of Project Helix remains unclear.

These reports should be treated as unconfirmed until official announcements from Sony and Microsoft. While KeplerL2 has a track record with hardware leaks, specifications and timelines can shift during production.
