PS5 Emulator Runs on Xbox Series X for First Time
A developer has ported KytyPS5, an open-source PlayStation 5 emulator, to Xbox Series X through Developer Mode. Four PS5 games now boot on Microsoft's hardware, though performance remains early-stage with frame rate issues.
PS5 emulation has reached Xbox Series X for the first time. A modder named Devran Cosmo Uenal ported KytyPS5, an open-source PlayStation 5 emulator originally built for Windows, Linux and Apple Silicon Macs, onto Microsoft's console. The port, called PS5X, runs through Xbox Developer Mode and marks a technical milestone in cross-platform emulation.
Uenal describes PS5X as a research project aimed at PS5 homebrew and backups of games people legally own. The build excludes Sony firmware and decryption keys, following standard practices in emulation development to avoid legal complications.
Four PS5 games currently boot on Xbox Series X through the emulator. Quake II is the only title with public footage showing gameplay, with frame rates ranging between 20 and 45 FPS and occasional drops below 20. Input lag is noticeable. The developer is also testing Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Gran Turismo 7, though none are confirmed as playable yet. All four working games originally released on other platforms, meaning no PS5 exclusive currently runs on Xbox through PS5X.
The Xbox controller works across all four games, and sound functions in some titles. Performance remains a significant limitation. The PC version of KytyPS5 also struggles with demanding games, with titles like Astro Bot and Demon's Souls reaching single-digit frame rates.
The core challenge lies in graphics translation. KytyPS5 renders through Vulkan, a cross-platform graphics API that Xbox Series X does not support. Instead, the console uses DirectX 12, requiring PS5X to translate all graphics work between the two systems. This translation layer creates two problems: fewer games boot due to rendering incompatibility, and the additional processing lowers frame rates on hardware already emulating another console's architecture. Improvements to KytyPS5's PC version don't automatically reach the Xbox port and must be adapted separately.
PS5X runs exclusively in Xbox Developer Mode, which is not a jailbreak or hack. Microsoft created this mode for developers to test software on retail consoles. Enabling it requires the Xbox Dev Mode app from the Microsoft Store, a Microsoft Partner Center developer account, and an activation code from the Partner Center website. Switching modes does not brick the console, and users can return to Retail Mode at any time. Retail games and apps are unavailable while in Developer Mode.
Emulators are generally legal in most regions when they contain no copyrighted code. PS5X follows this by excluding Sony's firmware and decryption keys. Downloading PS5 games without ownership remains piracy. Sony has previously sent takedown requests to emulation projects and could take action against PS5X.
No public release of PS5X currently exists. Uenal has shared the project only through video demos and social media posts, and no download link or official repository is available.
PS5X demonstrates that PlayStation 5 code can run on another company's console, but playable performance on major PS5 exclusives remains distant. Progress depends on better DirectX translation and continued improvements to KytyPS5 itself. Emulating current-generation consoles typically requires years of development before most game libraries become playable.
