PS3 Emulator RPCS3 Adds Physical Disc Support as Sony Plans to End Production in 2028

The open-source PS3 emulator RPCS3 has announced support for playing physical PS3 games directly on PC, marking a significant development in game preservation. The announcement, made via social media in September 2026, enables players to run games released up to 20 years ago without relying on server infrastructure.

To use the feature, players need a compatible Blu-ray disc drive, which RPCS3 has documented on its official site with a comprehensive list of supported models. Recent updates to the emulator have extended disc drive support beyond Windows to also include Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD, alongside optimizations for installation times from physical media.

While RPCS3 describes the process as "plug and play," setup requires an initial step: users must provide the disc's decryption key by placing it in a data/redump folder before first boot. After this one-time configuration, the disc can be read and decrypted on the fly during gameplay. The emulator currently supports over 75% of the PS3 library, including titles like Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time and inFAMOUS 2.

The development arrives shortly after Sony announced it will cease production of physical discs for PlayStation games in January 2028 and plans to shut down the PS3 online storefront in summer 2027. Currently, PS5 owners cannot natively play their PS3 library outside of PS Plus Premium cloud streaming. This emulation advancement underscores ongoing concerns about game preservation and access to legacy titles as the industry shifts toward digital-only distribution.

The RPCS3 project demonstrates how community-driven emulation can provide long-term access to aging hardware and software, particularly relevant as the PS3 approaches its 20th anniversary this year.
