Pocketpair Lead Expected 200k Concurrent Players for Palworld 1.0, Then It Passed 900k on Steam
Following Palworld's massive early access launch, Pocketpair comms and publishing lead John Buckley anticipated modest figures for the 1.0 update, only for the game to rocket past 960,000 concurrent players on Steam alone.
Following the supernatural success of Palworld's early access release, Pocketpair comms and publishing lead John Buckley held much more modest expectations for the game's 1.0 update. Speaking in an interview, Buckley revealed that if the update had managed to reach 200,000 concurrent players—amounting to less than 10% of the game's original launch peak—it would have been considered absolute "party time" for the studio. Prior to the release of version 1.0, the survival title had been hovering around the 45,000 concurrent player mark on Steam.
Instead, Palworld 1.0 rocketed straight to 960,000 concurrent users on Steam alone, achieving roughly five times Buckley's expectations globally alongside an insane amount of sales. While Pocketpair was reasonably confident that the update would draw back a healthy wave of returning players who had not played in two years, the team did not anticipate such a massive influx of brand-new players purchasing and experiencing the game for the first time.
Reflecting on the studio's broader trajectory, Buckley discussed how Pocketpair is actively expanding into spin-offs and other genres. This includes upcoming projects like the cozy farm simulation game Palfarm—designed for players who want to hang out with their Pals with fewer guns and base-building grinds—as well as a third-party Palworld MMO. Ultimately, the studio hopes to shape a future where different versions of Palworld cater to various distinct audiences.
