Black Caviar Games showcased PIO: A Robot's Story at Tokyo Game Show, revealing a retro-futuristic action game that combines soulslite combat, platforming, and exploration across a reimagined Moscow and remote Northern Pacific locations.

Players control Kir, a young inventor with a mischievous streak, who embarks on a desperate mission to find his kidnapped father. The narrative starts slowly but grows into something substantial, with a central mystery that unfolds as players progress through the world.

The demo featured sumptuous visuals set against falling cherry blossoms in a technologically advanced corner of Moscow. Environments are largely linear but reward curiosity, with multiple paths, side missions, and hidden elements encouraging exploration. The gameplay loop combines third-person action, platforming, and soulslite mechanics, with combat that feels diverse and satisfying.

Combat offers varied weapons including ranged electric-based firearms, melee options, and a glove capable of area-of-effect attacks. The game emphasizes loot discovery, with players constantly finding breakable boxes, machines to dismantle, and ground loot that feeds into a crafting and upgrade system. Character progression stems from multiple systems, allowing players to grow stronger through equipment enhancements.

Enemy design stands out from typical sci-fi fare. Rather than generic robots, the game features distinctive units like guard dog-style robots modeled on Akitas. According to studio CEO Ivan Kuznetsov, much of the wider game world extends beyond Moscow to vast landscapes and remote islands in the North Pacific, suggesting substantial scope beyond the initial setting.

Black Caviar Games plans to release a demo later in 2024. The game is slated for early access in 2027. The studio is currently seeking a publisher or investment to support development.
