Persona 4 Revival Producer Explains Why Yosuke Romance Was Omitted and English Voice Cast Was Replaced

Developer Atlus has shared new details regarding the upcoming RPG remake Persona 4 Revival, addressing highly requested features and some of the project's most significant creative shifts. Producer Kazuhisa Wada recently discussed why certain fan hopes, such as a romance option for the character Yosuke, will not be featured, alongside the reasoning behind completely replacing the game's English voice cast.

No Yosuke Romance Option Planned

Speculation regarding a romance option for the protagonist's close companion, Yosuke, has persisted for years due to cut voice lines discovered in the original 2008 release. However, Wada confirmed to GamesRadar+ that there are no plans to implement a Yosuke romance option in the remake, despite the development team considering the idea.

"I was aware that some people were talking online about, like, 'Oh, Yosuke,' and they were kind of hoping for that," Wada explained. "But we were thinking, if we did Yosuke, we kind of would have to do all the other male characters as well. And if we did that, that is a lot of work. So we were thinking about our time and schedule. I don't know if we could actually handle this, so we decided to let Yosuke float on by."

While Yosuke's character in the original game has faced criticism for being insensitive and homophobic, Wada noted that the character's depiction is being adjusted for the remake to make him "more fitting for the world we live in now," even without the inclusion of a romance path.

A Completely New English Voice Cast

In addition to character adjustments, Persona 4 Revival will feature an entirely new English voice cast. According to Wada, Atlus originally hoped to bring back the original cast, but scheduling conflicts and industry departures made it an all-or-nothing situation.

The original 2008 voice cast featured several actors who have since achieved major stardom, including Yuri Lowenthal (Yosuke), Troy Baker (Kanji), and Laura Bailey (Rise). Wada explained that with a decade-plus gap, some original actors are no longer active in the industry, while others have schedules that are incredibly difficult to secure.

"So we realized we can't re-gather that whole cast," Wada said. "So we're like, 'OK, I guess we have to kind of once again roll up our sleeves. Alright, let's start over. Let's get a whole new cast in and let's do our best.'" Wada added that the team chose to start fresh rather than mix new actors with a fraction of the original cast out of respect for the original cast's work.

Release Date and Music

Ahead of its launch, Atlus has released the battle theme song "Prime Time Golden Hour Show" from Persona 4 Revival on YouTube and major streaming platforms, featuring vocals by Shiori Sasaki and composition by the ATLUS Sound Team.

Persona 4 Revival is scheduled to launch on February 18, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Xbox PC.
