PC Gaming Hardware Prices Hit New Highs, Leaving Gamers to Make Do With Aging Rigs

A PC Gamer hardware writer reflects on 2026's inflated component costs, explaining why a $20-25 seat cushion became their biggest setup upgrade this year. DDR5 memory, SSDs, and graphics cards have seen dramatic price increases, pushing many players to

PC gaming hardware prices have reached levels that are forcing many enthusiasts to postpone upgrades they would normally make. A PC Gamer hardware writer recently highlighted the scale of the problem, noting that the most significant upgrade to their personal setup in 2026 was a $20-25 seat cushion, purchased primarily for comfort rather than performance.

The writer points to specific price comparisons to illustrate how expensive component upgrades have become. DDR5 memory kits with 64 GB capacity now cost well north of $800, compared to the $100 paid three years ago for a 32 GB kit. High-capacity SSDs tell a similar story: a 2 TB drive that cost $130 three years ago has been replaced by 4 TB models priced upwards of $400.

Graphics card pricing has been particularly challenging. The RTX 5070, Nvidia's current mid-range option, costs $779 for the base model. The writer notes that the RTX 5060 Ti 8 GB and RX 9070 GRE are among the last GPUs available at relatively sensible prices, yet even these represent a significant investment compared to historical pricing.

The writer attributes much of this price surge to AI server demand, which has "ravaged the consumer market" and disrupted the typical upgrade cycle. Many PC gamers are waiting out what the writer describes as a "pricing storm," postponing hardware investments they would normally make every few years.

Not all peripheral categories have followed the same trajectory. Gaming monitors, mice, keyboards, and controllers have resisted the broader price increases, offering a more affordable avenue for those seeking setup improvements. The writer also expressed hope that upcoming sales events, including October Prime Day and Black Friday, might bring meaningful discounts to the market, though the current industry conditions make that uncertain.
