PC Gamer polled its readers about RGB lighting preferences on gaming PCs, and the results challenge assumptions about PC gaming aesthetics. Out of 1,441 respondents, 31% reported keeping their rigs completely dark with no RGB lighting at all.

The survey offered six lighting preference categories. The second most common choice was "I'm a tasteful Terrance," with 19% of voters opting for minimal RGB accents. Another 18% said they turn off most RGB lighting but keep some, and 15% leave their lighting at factory settings. Only 10% reported having most of their PC lit with RGB at all times.

At the extremes, 7% of respondents, or 104 people, selected "Full unicorn vomit," indicating they embrace RGB lighting throughout their entire build. The pollster noted that overlap likely exists between the "tasteful" and "mostly off" categories, as some voters mentioned having RGB only from specific components like LED-lit motherboards or graphics cards.

The preference for minimal or no lighting appears driven by practical considerations. As noted in poll comments, many gamers have RGB lighting on individual components by default rather than by choice, while others have simply never adjusted factory settings. The strong showing of the no-RGB option suggests a significant portion of the PC gaming community prioritizes function and aesthetics over lighting effects.

PC Gamer is now surveying readers on which PC tech discounts they hope to see during October Prime Day and Black Friday sales.
