Paradox Interactive Officially Announces Post-Apocalyptic Grand Strategy Game Afterworld

Following recent leaks, Crusader Kings creator Paradox Interactive has revealed Afterworld, a post-apocalyptic strategy game featuring a procedurally generated North America.

Following leaks earlier in the week, developer and publisher Paradox Interactive has officially announced Afterworld. Created by Paradox Development Studio—the team behind Crusader Kings III and Hearts of Iron IV—the upcoming title is a post-apocalyptic grand strategy game that tasks players with navigating a procedurally generated North America where wasteland tribes jostle for dominance.

According to game director Dan Lind, Afterworld represents the studio's first non-historical setting in a decade. Lind stated that the game provides the team's first opportunity in a long time to build a world from scratch, and the first they have destroyed before the game begins. The remains of the old world persist in fragments across the map, waiting to be discovered by players.

In Afterworld, players will choose from various origins, prologues, and formative "Traumas" that dictate starting resources and priorities. One of the playable factions includes the Shelterfolk, a group that resorted to cannibalism during a lean season and is prone to demagoguery. Rather than settling in a single permanent location like in traditional 4X strategy games, players will need to relocate often in response to threats and resource demands as they search for food, water, and fuel.

The game’s expansive map is divided into fog-of-war-covered regions. As players explore, encounters with other tribes, buildings, or terrain features unlock "Ideas" that serve as technologies for research. For example, crossing a river can spark the concept of irrigation. Players can also discover pre-fall technologies that grant a serious competitive edge. However, the ultimate threat of destruction remains, as the press release warns that "the same power that ended the old world could end the new one too."

Societal development is another key pillar of the gameplay. Players can shape their tribe's social customs, political systems, laws, and beliefs. Players can institute local democracies, ban drinking, orchestrate youth work crews, or outlaw slavery, while dealing with outside societal influences. Factions feature named characters with distinct statistics who can lead war parties or hold political office.

Religion and belief systems also play a significant role. Players can define specific philosophies as orthodox while condemning others. However, the tribe's population retains agency, separating into groups of believers and doubters. These internal beliefs, alongside clashing values and mythologies of rival tribes, will actively complicate trade and diplomacy. The ultimate goal is to unite these factions under one banner to establish a new empire, though players must manage the compounding supply and resource issues that come with rapid expansion.

Paradox has confirmed that Afterworld will feature both co-op and PvP multiplayer modes. Currently, there is no official release date, with the studio stating only that the game is "coming soon."
