Paradox Interactive has prohibited Discord profile pictures of historical figures born after 1 January 1800, with limited exceptions, following a moderation dispute that escalated into player outrage.

The conflict began when a Discord moderator banned a user for displaying a photograph of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Republic of Turkey. According to reports, the moderator described Atatürk as controversial and referenced disputed historical events. The ban triggered significant backlash from the Hearts of Iron 4 community, resulting in Steam review bombs targeting the game.

Game director Laszlo "Batya" Pieper acknowledged the mishandling in a Discord post. "Paradox never aims to review history or take positions on political figures, and we clearly handled that responsibility poorly," he wrote. He noted that the original rule concerning real-world persons as profile pictures had been enforced inconsistently and required revision.

Under the new guidelines, players may use official in-game portraits from Hearts of Iron 4, including those depicting figures born after 1800, with one exception: prominent leaders of Nazi Germany remain prohibited. Community members will have seven days to update non-compliant profile pictures once the rule formally takes effect.

Pieper explained the reasoning behind the specific date threshold. "The aim here is to ensure our guidelines leave no room for ambiguity, nor edge cases in the future, hence the clear cut-off," he stated. He also emphasised that the rule was not designed to invite debate about which historical figures are permissible.

The developer reported receiving substantial abuse and threats directed at staff, moderators, and external parties. Players previously banned for sending abuse or threats in response to the Atatürk situation will remain banned after the new rules take effect.

The dispute has coincided with community frustration over Hearts of Iron 4's lack of official Turkish language support, potentially fuelling wider discontent with the title's development priorities.
