Palworld Lead Warns Steam Early Access Has 'Lost Its Meaning'

Pocketpair communications and publishing lead John Buckley has voiced concerns over how Steam's early access program has shifted, noting that players often treat unfinished titles like finished games.

Pocketpair and Palworld communications and publishing lead John Buckley recently discussed the state of the work-in-progress approach, sharing concerns that Steam's early access program has "lost its meaning." Reflecting on earlier days following the transition from Steam Greenlight, Buckley described an era where buyers understood they were participating in development, offering feedback, and communicating directly with creators.

Today, however, Buckley notes a shift influenced by hyper-casual mobile culture and live-service gaming habits washing through Steam. According to Buckley, people now purchase early access games as if they were normal, finished releases. In Palworld's specific case, players might dive in heavily for a couple of weeks before complaining that developers are failing to churn out new content quickly, overlooking the fact that development takes time.

Buckley clarified that he does not hold it against gamers who simply want to enjoy a title without understanding the behind-the-scenes realities of game development. He also pointed out that console platforms struggle even more with the early access concept because console players are generally less accustomed to incomplete gameplay loops compared to PC gamers, who frequently provide detailed bug reports.

Despite these cultural shifts and instances where early access has been abused as a substitute for traditional funding or functioning like a new form of Kickstarter, Pocketpair remains a strong advocate for the model. Buckley confirmed that the studio is confident in early access and would choose it again for future projects, noting that their previous survival game, Craftopia, is also approaching its own 1.0 update.
