Overwatch Season 5 Adds Vampire Hero Doctrine, Reworks Sombra and Roadhog

BlizzCon 2026 opened with major updates for Overwatch, including a new vampire hero and significant reworks for two longtime characters. The announcements came during the opening ceremony, where game director Aaron Keller introduced the upcoming changes.

The new hero, Doctrine, is a vampire with a cyborg arm and mechanical bats. He was shown in a story trailer that connects him to Doomfist, who has returned after being absent since the Reign of Talon events earlier this year. Doctrine wields a scepter that can heal teammates while damaging enemies, and he has drones that provide healing and speed boosts. His Infuse ability allows him to transform his next action. He will be playable on the BlizzCon show floor this weekend, and a Hero Trial is currently live in-game through the weekend.

Doctrine will officially join the roster in October as part of Overwatch's Season 5, following the release of D. Mon last month on August 11. The new season will also bring a new map called Grímsvötn, continuing the game's year-long story arc.

Two of Overwatch's most controversial characters are also getting reworks. Sombra will transition into a support role, marking a significant shift from her previous damage-based gameplay. Roadhog is set to become less frustrating to play against, though precise details about both reworks were not shared during the ceremony. Both heroes have received numerous balance adjustments since their initial release.

The next Overwatch Spotlight, which previously revealed five heroes in a single event, is scheduled for February 2027. Blizzard has not announced Doctrine's exact release date beyond his October availability with Season 5.
