Blizzard Entertainment revealed its ninth new hero of 2026 at BlizzCon, introducing Doctrine, a support character inspired by vampire mythology. The announcement came during the Official Xbox Podcast, where game director Aaron Keller and principal designer Ben Bell discussed the hero's design philosophy and gameplay mechanics.

Doctrine functions as a support hero despite his villain archetype, with abilities centered around life energy and decision-making. His kit includes a precise scepter weapon that heals allies and damages enemies, a dash that grants temporary damage reduction, and deployable drones that heal teammates and increase their attack speed.

The character's defining mechanic is an empowerment ability with multiple charges that transforms his other powers. Activating it on his dash enables flight, useful for reaching high ground positions. Empowering his drones increases the user's attack speed and self-healing. Applying it to his scepter causes shots to pierce through enemies, allowing potential back-line eliminations with proper positioning. Aaron Keller emphasized the high skill ceiling, noting that successful play requires both precise aim and high-level strategic decision-making.

Alongside Doctrine, Blizzard announced Grimsvötn, a new playable map joining the seasonal rotation in Season 5.

The studio also detailed significant reworks for two existing heroes. Sombra is transitioning from DPS to the support role. She retains her stealth ability and hacking mechanics, though hacking now requires her ultimate ability to activate. The change aims to keep Sombra closer to her team, providing consistent healing while maintaining her core identity and occasional independent actions.

Roadhog receives adjustments targeting his one-shot elimination potential. He gains a new damage-absorption ability that blocks incoming enemy fire without affecting his health pool directly. His primary fire now operates on a two-hit cadence, requiring two shots to secure eliminations. The delay between shots gives targets significantly more time to react and escape.

Ben Bell described the team's approach to the 2026 season as deliberately ambitious. The year began with an Overwatch Spotlight event in February that announced five new heroes and marked the return of story content. Subsequent seasons each released a new character while advancing the narrative. The story arc concludes in Season 5 with Doctrine's introduction.

Bell acknowledged the energy surrounding the game's resurgence this year, noting that player enthusiasm and engagement drove the development philosophy. He described BlizzCon as an opportunity to make a significant statement, and emphasized the team's focus on player happiness and community building.

The developers teased upcoming announcements for next year's Spotlight event. Bell stated the team plans to maintain the momentum of large seasonal reveals while introducing new gameplay elements, additional heroes, and features players have requested, alongside surprises intended to generate excitement.
