Capcom Reveals Sasaki Ganryu and Lore for Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Capcom has released a new installment in its "Curious Cases" showcase series for the upcoming title Onimusha: Way of the Sword, providing a deep dive into the character of Sasaki Ganryu and the broader lore of the franchise. The spotlight on Ganryu reveals a tragic transformation for the legendary swordsman and historical rival of Miyamoto Musashi.

In the upcoming title, Ganryu's fate is inextricably linked to Musashi's. While both characters wield an Oni Gauntlet, their approaches to its supernatural power differ significantly. While Musashi struggles to maintain control over the gauntlet's influence, Ganryu has chosen to willingly embrace its power in a desperate bid for strength. This obsession has led Ganryu to utilize forbidden techniques that increase his combat prowess at the cost of his sanity. The trailer suggests Ganryu has transitioned from a proud swordsman into a corrupted warrior who harvests human souls to fuel his gauntlet.

The gameplay mechanics for Onimusha: Way of the Sword indicate a significant evolution from the original PlayStation 2 entries. Moving away from fixed-camera tank controls, the new title features an omnidirectional parry and blocking system. Players will utilize Musashi's arsenal of one-handed and two-handed strikes alongside the returning soul absorption mechanic. By extracting souls from defeated Genma, players can strengthen weapons and unlock new abilities, such as Oni Strength for environmental destruction or Oni Agility for wall-climbing.

The setting shifts the franchise from the traditional Sengoku period to early Edo-period Kyoto. As a fragile era of peace is threatened by the return of the Genma, Musashi must defend the capital. The lore video released alongside the showcase also clarifies the ancient conflict between the Oni and the Genma, two factions from Hell that have historically fought over the fate of humanity.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is scheduled for release on September 4, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
