Onimusha: Way of the Sword Hits 1 Million Sales on Launch Day

Capcom's Onimusha: Way of the Sword has surpassed one million sales worldwide on its first day of release, propelling the overall franchise past 10 million units.

Capcom has announced that Onimusha: Way of the Sword has surpassed one million sales worldwide on its first day of release. This milestone brings the all-time overall sales for the Onimusha franchise to in excess of 10 million units globally. The title marks the first major entry in the series in two decades and forms part of Capcom's ongoing strategy to re-activate stagnant intellectual properties that have not seen new releases recently, alongside releasing major new titles each year to maximize corporate value.

According to Capcom, the strong launch performance was aided by multiple marketing initiatives ahead of release, including demo releases and hands-on exhibitions designed to expand awareness across a broad range of users. In the game, players step into the role of Miyamoto Musashi—modeled after legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune—as he explores a dark fantasy Kyoto during the Edo period to battle demonic swordsmen and supernatural threats.

Combat mechanics in Onimusha: Way of the Sword feature an intricate system centered around parrying, deflecting, and countering. Players utilize a basic parry that builds up a Blazing State meter to increase damage and stagger, an advanced deflect ability requiring secondary button inputs, and the high-risk, high-reward Issin counter. Depleting enemy stamina further allows players to utilize the Break Issen mechanic to dismember foes for swift kills, showcasing an inventive approach to action combat mechanics that has drawn praise from critics and players alike.
