Onimusha: Way of the Sword Hits 1 Million Launch Day Sales as Capcom Pushes IP Revival
Capcom's first new Onimusha game in two decades exceeded 1 million sales on launch day, bringing the franchise to 10 million lifetime sales. The publisher signals continued focus on reviving dormant intellectual properties.

Samurai adventure Onimusha: Way of the Sword surpassed 1 million sales on its launch day, Capcom announced. The milestone marks a significant commercial success for the franchise's first new mainline entry in 20 years, following Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams.
The launch day performance brought the Onimusha series to 10 million lifetime sales across all titles. PC Gamer's reviewer awarded Way of the Sword an 83/100 score, praising its challenge and boss design. The reviewer noted that despite concerns raised by the demo, the game delivers difficulty, particularly through boss encounters that punish poor parry timing and reckless button mashing.
Capcom framed the release as part of a broader strategy to maximize corporate value. The publisher stated it is "focusing on re-activating IPs that haven't had a new title launch recently" while "regularly releasing major new titles each year." The company emphasized its intention to leverage its "rich library of content" through this dual approach.
The success arrives amid a strong period for Capcom, which has released well-received Resident Evil remakes, new mainline Resident Evil titles, Monster Hunter Rise and Wilds, Street Fighter 6, and Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess in recent years.
