Ancient Board Game Mancala Gets Modern Roguelike Treatment in Oh!Ware
Oh!Ware reimagines mancala, a game possibly 1,500 to 7,000 years old, as a roguelike deckbuilder with marbles instead of cards. The indie title arrived on Steam with a fresh take on one of history's oldest pastimes.

Oh!Ware, a new roguelike on Steam, applies the 2026 deckbuilder formula to mancala, one of humanity's oldest board games. The game replaces traditional cards with marbles, creating what could be called a "bagbuilder" instead.
Mancala itself has deep historical roots. Some historians believe it may be the oldest board game in recorded history, with archaeological evidence from Jordan dating around 6000 BC. Other concrete archaeological finds place the game around 500-600 AD. While mancala's exact origins remain uncertain, it competes with ancient games like senet and mehen for the title of oldest.
In Oh!Ware, players move marbles around the board while collecting mana and defeating enemies. The game offers typical roguelike progression, including a three-option choice system with themed picks like "blessing marble" and "aggro marble." The demo's tutorial can be skipped, though newcomers to mancala may find themselves rusty after years away from the classic game. Oh!Ware launched on Steam about a week before this writing with 23 user reviews.
