Obsidian Entertainment will maintain its creative independence and existing leadership after being absorbed by Bethesda, according to an internal memo from Bethesda boss Jill Braff seen by IGN.

The studio will continue to be run by founder Feargus Urquhart and his leadership team under the new structure. Braff stated that "the creative identity and strengths that make Obsidian distinct will remain at the core of their studio and work." The primary change is in reporting structure, with Obsidian now reporting directly to Braff rather than operating as a standalone entity.

The acquisition consolidates Bethesda's Fallout franchise efforts. Bethesda continues developing Fallout 5 alongside The Elder Scrolls 6, while Obsidian is now confirmed to be working on a separate new Fallout game. The two teams will collaborate on "early work already underway on a new Fallout project," Braff said, with updates expected in the coming months.

Obsidian is best known for creating Fallout: New Vegas. Separately, remasters of Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 3 are in development and will release in the future.

Braff framed the move as supporting Bethesda's "franchise-led model" while maintaining clear accountability for both the studio and the Fallout series.
