Nvidia DLSS 5 Officially Launching in September Alongside NBA 2K27

Nvidia has announced that DLSS 5 will officially debut in early September, with NBA 2K27 serving as the first supported game.

Nvidia has officially announced that its controversial DLSS 5 technology will be released on September 4th, with subsequent reports noting a September 3rd window following private demonstrations at Gamescom. The first game confirmed to support the new technology is NBA 2K27, which arrives on PC around the same timeframe. According to Nvidia, the performance hit for an official implementation of DLSS 5 in a game will be around 50 to 60 percent, making it primarily useful for owners of high-end hardware such as the RTX 5090 GPU.

Unlike previous versions of Nvidia's upscaling technology that render images at lower resolutions and use AI transformer models to polish them, DLSS 5 takes a markedly different approach aimed at achieving photorealism. It utilizes a 2D generative AI layer on top of rendered frames through what Nvidia terms 3D-guided Neural Rendering. This technology has sparked considerable debate and scrutiny regarding artistic intent, with critics comparing its visual impact to an aggressive AI filter or beauty adjustment.

To address concerns over creative control, Nvidia showcased a suite of developer tools during behind-closed-doors demonstrations. Developers are provided with a choice of three different AI models—designated as A, B, and C—alongside parameters such as tone intensity and structure intensity controlled via sliders. Furthermore, an object-masking feature allows creators to apply the AI-enhanced treatment to specific scene elements, such as a fruit bowl or individual character models, while leaving other assets untouched. Previous versions of DLSS will continue to exist alongside the new iteration, meaning players and developers can choose which system to use depending on game implementation.

While hands-on previews of NBA 2K27 running with DLSS 5 showed subtle enhancements like glistening sweat and improved lighting without excessive uncanny valley effects, higher slider settings and certain models can produce oversaturated or overly stylized visuals. DLSS 5 will be supported exclusively by Nvidia RTX 50 series GPUs. A preliminary list of titles slated to receive DLSS 5 support in the future includes AION 2, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Black State, CINDER CITY, Delta Force, Hogwarts Legacy, Justice, NARAKA: BLADEPOINT, Neverness to Everness, Resident Evil Requiem, Sea of Remnants, Starfield, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and Where Winds Meet, though specific patch release dates have not yet been established.
