Mortal Shell 2 Guides Detail Map Discovery, Fast Travel, and Character Upgrades

Recent coverage explores key systems in Mortal Shell 2, detailing how map fragments are discovered, fast travel is unlocked, and gear is upgraded through Franz at the Tarforge.

Developer Cold Symmetry's soulslike sequel, Mortal Shell 2, introduces several adjustments to exploration and combat compared to its predecessor. Players venturing through the dark fantasy world will find that the game's map does not automatically reveal itself as they explore. Instead, uncovering terrain and locating Corrupted Gates requires discovering map fragments left near Ruk's large statues, which are marked with icons of a black bird on the in-progress map.

To navigate the expansive world efficiently, players can unlock fast travel early in the game. Fast travel becomes available automatically after returning at least four Ova to the Marrow Keep by cleansing beacons. Upon returning with the fourth Ova, players are granted Mether's Breath, enabling instant movement between any discovered beacons from a beacon menu. Alternatively, Mether's Breath can be used from the inventory to return instantly to the Marrow Keep from anywhere on the map, though doing so costs all of the currently held Mortal Shell 2 Gloom.

Progression also relies heavily on upgrading gear at the Tarforge, managed by Franz in the Marrow Keep. Players can bring specific items found throughout the world to Franz to unlock the full capabilities of the Tarforge for weapons, sidearms, and Tarstones. Essential upgrade components include the Muradean Actuator found near the Village Outskirts beacon, the Obsidian Lathe located in the Martyr's Tomb Dungeon behind the Great Arbiter of Flesh arena, and the Etching Needles found inside the Mushroom Village gate.

Completion times for Mortal Shell 2 vary depending on playstyle. Officially, Cold Symmetry estimates a standard playthrough takes between 30 and 40 hours, while critical path runs can take over 20 hours and 100% completion can exceed 60 hours. Players seeking adjustments to difficulty can utilize items like the Slayer Seal to decrease combat difficulty—though doing so permanently disables achievements—or the Gloombound Flame to trigger Night Mode for increased enemy density and rewards.
