Mortal Shell 2 Receives First Major Update Adding New Items and Balances

A major new patch for Mortal Shell 2 introduces fragile tarstones, Egon's stone, extra beacons in Fainweald and Mammon, and major fixes for riposte scaling.

A little over one week following its launch, developer Cold Symmetry has released the first major update for Mortal Shell 2. The update implements a wide variety of gameplay adjustments, new consumable items, travel additions, and crucial balance changes to the Soulslike sequel.

Among the headline additions are several new items designed to change how players interact with the game's economy and survival mechanics. Players can now find fragile tarstones, which break after losing durability, alongside a glimpse stone that wears down as enemies are defeated before breaking into glimpses. Furthermore, the new Egon's stone allows players to revive at a dungeon entrance at the cost of the item's durability, preventing the loss of gloom upon that death once it breaks.

Navigating the game world has also been streamlined. Additional beacons have been introduced in Fainweald and Mammon, although these are only active during the day. In addition to resetting some problematic chests, the developers have placed various new items throughout the world and introduced two cosmetic headpieces—one resembling a hand-stitched frog, the other resembling a potato sack—which can be unlocked after completing certain questlines.

Combat and riposte mechanics have undergone significant overhauls. Riposte damage against enemies now scales directly with enemy health, preventing night mode and new game plus from feeling overly punishing. Control returns to players faster as many player riposte recoveries now end sooner. Additionally, riposte damage is now calculated and applied directly by the riposte itself, resolving issues where damage would apply twice or fail to register entirely. Invulnerability windows have also been made consistent across all ripostes, lasting through the entirety of the animation.

Finally, the update delivers several technical and performance optimizations. Enemy headcounts have been reduced in densely populated areas to improve overall game performance, while enemy tracking and magnetism maximums have been tweaked to be more forgiving. Awkward character animations during cutscenes have also been fixed.
