Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance Expansion Detailed with New Boost Actions, Story, and 2027 Release Window
Capcom has debuted a new trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance during a State of Play broadcast, showcasing upcoming story details, new monsters like Gundoraja and Araketa, and the new Boost Action combat mechanics ahead of a 2027 launch.
Capcom has pulled back the curtain on Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, a massive upcoming expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds. Debuting during a State of Play broadcast, the new trailer offered a detailed look at what lies ahead for hunters as the story moves past the conclusion of the base game. The expansion is currently scheduled to launch in 2027 for platforms including PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S, alongside a version in development for Nintendo Switch 2.
Set years after the encounter with Arkveld, the expansion follows the Expedition Team as they face a profound new threat. The story begins with the sudden arrival of the colossal Elder Dragon Lao-Shan Lung in the Forbidden Lands. Following years of preparation—including the construction of Madoi Stronghold—and the clearing of mist over Wyveria's skies, players will discover the Skybound Eyrie, a new floating locale featuring lush landscapes, ancient ruins, and new endemic life. Familiar characters return, including a grown-up Nata and his Wudwud partner Bangard, who will guide hunters into the new frontier to investigate ecological disturbances, strange abnormalities, and newly emerged beasts.
Among the new adversaries are Araketa, a pack-hunting Bird Wyvern capable of high-speed flight via air currents from its wings, and Gundoraja, an Elder Dragon that controls storm clouds from the heights of the Skybound Eyrie. To tackle these threats, hunters will gain access to new Master Rank content and expanded combat capabilities. A central addition is the Boost Bracer, a piece of equipment that utilizes the Hunter's Slinger. Activating it allows players to use powerful Boost Driver abilities to create openings and enter a temporary Boost mode that enhances the unique traits of all 14 weapon types, including specific new capabilities for the Greatsword and Bow.
To access Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, players will need the base game, must reach Hunter Rank 40, and complete the main story quest "Awaking From a Dream." Capcom has also made a free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo available on the PlayStation Store, allowing new players to try out all 14 weapon types and carry their save data over to the full game as preparations continue toward the expansion's 2027 release.
