Modders Dramatically Improve DLSS 5 Performance Before Official Optimization
The PC modding community has developed techniques to significantly reduce DLSS 5's substantial performance penalty, running neural rendering at render resolution instead of output resolution and enabling Quality, Balance, and Performance modes.

NVIDIA's newly launched DLSS 5 technology has demonstrated impressive visual results in early implementations, but it comes with a significant performance cost that modders have already begun addressing through creative technical solutions.
According to Digital Foundry's testing of NBA 2K27, DLSS 5 currently incurs a heavy frame-rate penalty. On an RTX 5090 running Ultra settings at native 4K, performance dropped from 128.4 FPS to 62.7 FPS—approximately a 40–60 percent reduction. Even on an RTX 5060 at 1080p Ultra settings, frame rates fell from 72.8 FPS to 42.3 FPS. Digital Foundry founder Richard Leadbetter described the technology as "super, super heavy," noting that the performance cost comes from a relatively fixed frame-time overhead ranging from 8.2ms to 13.7ms depending on the graphics card and resolution.
Modders have already discovered that DLSS 5 in its current implementation operates at output resolution rather than render resolution, which limits optimization flexibility. By running the neural rendering network at render resolution before the game's DLSS upscaler activates, developers like matiasLombo have created DLSS 5 Autopilot, which introduces Quality, Balance, and Performance modes. These modes can substantially improve performance while potentially reducing the intensity of the neural rendering effect. Combined with jlrouzies-fr's DLSS5-Feeder module—which enables DLSS 5 injection into unsupported DX12, DX11, DX10, and Vulkan games—this approach represents a significant community-driven optimization.
Another experimental solution involves offloading neural rendering to a secondary GPU. A ReShade add-on called mgpu_bridge allows a second graphics card to handle the neural rendering pass independently, avoiding the performance penalty of returning processed frames to the primary GPU. This approach, documented on GitHub, has been tested with paired RTX 5060 Ti cards but remains a proof-of-concept requiring two monitors and careful hardware configuration.
While Digital Foundry's John Linneman expressed initial reservations about DLSS 5's character alteration capabilities following the March announcement, he found NBA 2K27's implementation "very, very subtle" and "pretty well" executed, with effects limited to crowd lighting and subtle jersey depth rather than wholesale character changes. However, he noted the technology remains "a really expensive way to add nice lighting detail into the image."
NVIDIA has stated it is working on improving DLSS 5 performance. Currently, DLSS 5 is available only for RTX 50-series graphics cards and officially supported only in NBA 2K27, though the modding community has already extended it to numerous other titles.
