Modders Discover RTX 5090 Can Use Standard 8-Pin Connectors

Following ongoing concerns regarding melting GPU connectors on high-end graphics cards, modders have bypassed the standard 12V-2x6 and 12VHPWR designs to test an RTX 5090 using traditional 8-pin power cables. The hardware modification was conducted by the team at TecLab, who fitted three 8-pin connectors to the back of the printed circuit board using hand-cut copper plates and connected them to the front via 24 cables arranged in three sets of eight.

During testing, the modified graphics card operated at higher power levels while producing interesting thermal results. The modders reported that the cables remained cooler than the original high-power connectors. Furthermore, testing demonstrated that a three-cable setup was not strictly required; TecLab successfully ran the GPU at over 3,300 MHz in the Port Royal benchmark using only two 8-pin cables, compared to a stock RTX 5090 boost clock of around 2,400 MHz. Even when running on a single cable, the GPU reached clock speeds over 3,200 MHz while avoiding melting issues, though that single cable did reach temperatures of 91 to 92 degrees Celsius.

These tests pushed the 8-pin cables above their official industry-recommended specifications. Standard 8-pin connectors carry a recommended limit of 150 W each, resulting in a maximum total specification of 450 W, whereas the RTX 5090 features a Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 575 W. However, TecLab showed that by unlocking the card's power limits, the 8-pin cables remained stable and ran cooler than the standard 12VHPWR connector despite exceeding their rated specifications.

While Nvidia may choose not to officially exceed the 150 W specification for standard 8-pin connectors, the mod demonstrates that traditional cable layouts can handle significant power delivery for high-end GPUs. The test highlights ongoing hardware community efforts to explore alternatives to modern multi-pin power solutions in the wake of documented melting incidents.
