Minecraft Dungeons II arrives September 29 on Xbox Series X and S, PC, Cloud, and other platforms. On the Official Xbox Podcast, design director Laura De Llorens from Mojang outlined the sequel's significant departures from the original dungeon crawler.

Jumping stands out as the most requested feature players got excited about. In the first Minecraft Dungeons, the inability to jump constrained level design but freed developers to control player movement. Adding jump functionality opened up vertical exploration and hidden spaces throughout the game world.

"Adding jump made that more complicated, but it also enabled us to have more verticality, to have more hidden spaces, things to discover, things to explore," De Llorens said. "We felt like that was an obvious thing to add when making a world that is big and expansive."

The sequel's world is now fully interconnected. Players can walk from the beginning to the end of the world without loading screens, a significant structural change from the original. De Llorens emphasized this reflected Minecraft's core identity as an expansive sandbox.

"We felt like, first of all, the Minecraft universe is one big, expansive sandbox of a thing, so it felt natural for what Minecraft is," she explained. "Also, we wanted the world to feel alive and to feel like the player was influencing the happenings in the world."

The connected world design creates a sense of player agency. Inhabitants face ongoing challenges players can help resolve, and spaces visibly change as progress is made. Players can find shortcuts that make traversal faster over time, reinforcing their influence on the world.

Beyond structure, Minecraft Dungeons II introduces new item arrays and revamped gear systems. These expanded progression mechanics let players customize combat to match their preferred playstyle more deeply than the original.

Developing a sequel required balancing multiple audiences: fans of the original game, new players unfamiliar with Minecraft Dungeons, and the broader Minecraft community expecting the game to meaningfully expand the universe.

"When we designed Minecraft Dungeons I, we thought, you need to recognize the world of Minecraft in Minecraft Dungeons," De Llorens said. "In the second one, we tried to make sure you recognized Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons I."

The team drew heavily from community feedback gathered after the first game's release. De Llorens described receiving "an avalanche of community feedback" and carefully considering which requests to prioritize. The decision to create a full sequel rather than expand the original came from realizing the scope of improvements the team wanted to make.

Minecraft Dungeons is a dungeon crawler adventure RPG where players progress solo or in multiplayer across the Minecraft world, with the goal of saving it from threats. The original released in 2020 as a more action-focused departure from Minecraft's sandbox gameplay.
