Mike Flanagan envisions three-season arc for Amazon's Carrie adaptation

The Haunting of Hill House director plans to extend Stephen King's classic horror story across multiple seasons on Prime Video, launching October 7.

Mike Flanagan has outlined ambitious plans for his new Amazon series adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie, hoping to stretch the story across three seasons rather than confining it to the source material's original scope.

Speaking to Collider, Flanagan said: "In my dream scenario, I think it's three seasons. In my dream scenario, I think Carrie has a wonderful three-step arc. It's a trilogy, really."

The series follows Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, a teenager navigating high school after spending most of her life isolated at home. The adaptation updates the story to a contemporary setting, focusing on how modern social media amplifies the intense bullying Carrie faces.

Flanagan has not yet detailed how he plans to structure the narrative across three seasons, though early trailers suggest the show addresses main story beats from King's novel. It remains unclear whether Flanagan intends to extend Carrie's personal arc beyond the original ending or introduce new characters and storylines to sustain the trilogy format.

All episodes premiere on Prime Video on October 7. Early reactions to the first episodes have been positive, with viewers praising how the adaptation brings the classic horror story into the social media age. Stephen King himself endorsed the project, writing on Threads: "Mike Flanagan's version of CARRIE is brilliant. What it has to say about social media is shocking and true."

Flanagan's next project is Clayface, described as the DCU's first venture into horror filmmaking.
