Microsoft Unveils New Program Allowing Xbox Users to Claim Digital Entitlements from Discs

Microsoft has fully unveiled a new program aimed at helping players preserve their physical game libraries by digitizing older Xbox titles. Originally rumored for quite some time, the system has now been officially introduced to members of the Xbox Insiders program. According to Jason Ronald, Vice President of Next Generation at Xbox, writing on Xbox Wire, the feature allows players to claim a digital entitlement simply by inserting a supported physical disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game.

While not every title is included right at the start, the system essentially covers most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games immediately. Furthermore, thousands of original Xbox and Xbox 360 games will be supported when the service launches for Xbox Insiders on August 31. Microsoft indicates that testing periods typically last one to three months before features roll out to the general public, and additional titles will continue to be added over time.

Once players complete the verification process, their physical discs continue to function exactly as they always have while unlocking digital benefits. Users can enjoy these claimed games across various devices supporting Xbox Play Anywhere—such as PCs, the Asus ROG Xbox Ally, and Xbox Cloud Gaming—ensuring physical media owners retain access even as hardware evolves without disc drives.
