Microsoft Introduces Time Limits and Usage-Based Pricing for Xbox Cloud Gaming Service
Microsoft has announced that it will introduce monthly cloud gaming hour limits for Xbox Game Pass subscribers starting in November.
Microsoft has announced major changes to its Xbox cloud gaming service, introducing monthly time limits and usage-based pricing beginning in November. Under the new model, various Xbox Game Pass tiers will feature a set number of included cloud gaming hours each month. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will receive 15 hours, Game Pass Premium members will get 10 hours, and Game Pass Essential subscribers will receive 5 hours.
Previously, eligible Game Pass subscribers could stream games without monthly hour limits. According to Xbox, the upcoming changes are expected to impact approximately 4% of total Game Pass subscribers. Once players exhaust their monthly allotment of hours, they will have the option to purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. Microsoft noted that specific available hours, purchasing options, and cloud gaming features may vary depending on the market, with pricing details slated for release prior to the changes taking effect.
Explaining the rationale behind the shift, Microsoft and sources familiar with the matter pointed to the escalating costs of building and operating cloud capacity, driven by factors involving hardware and bandwidth expenses. The company highlighted that user behaviors regarding cloud streaming have evolved significantly since the technology's resurgence between 2019 and 2021. Players now utilize cloud streaming for various reasons, including sampling games before local installation, playing newer titles on older generation hardware, or relying on cloud platforms as their primary gaming method when away from home or without a console.
Additionally, individuals who do not subscribe to Game Pass will still be able to access certain titles by purchasing cloud playtime hours directly through the Xbox Store and streaming eligible games they own on supported devices. Microsoft stated that it plans to monitor player feedback closely before and after the rollout to evaluate the new model and determine whether further adjustments are necessary.
