Metal Gear Solid 2 Speedrunners Discover First-Ever Boss Skip After 25 Years
A newly found exploit in Metal Gear Solid 2's Tanker section allows speedrunners to bypass the Olga Gurlukovich boss fight entirely by manipulating the game's bomb-detonation flag system.

Metal Gear Solid 2 speedrunners have uncovered a major exploit that sidesteps the game's opening boss encounter. Runner apel discovered a method to skip the mandatory fight against mercenary Olga Gurlukovich in the Tanker prologue, fundamentally changing how the game can be completed quickly.
The skip works by exploiting how Metal Gear Solid 2 handles explosives and checkpoint saves. In the normal playthrough, players must defeat Olga to obtain her USP pistol, which is required to manually destroy sensors protecting bombs on the ship. The new technique bypasses this entirely.
The method involves dragging an unconscious guard toward the laser sensors. When the guard wakes, the lasers trigger and detonate the bombs. The game checks a flag that determines whether the explosives can be triggered again. Normally, reloading after a game over resets this flag, causing the bombs to rearm. However, apel discovered that by rolling toward a checkpoint precisely as the guard triggers the bombs, the game saves the flag's state after detonation. This leaves the explosives permanently detonated, allowing Snake to pass through without the Olga encounter.
The technical precision required makes sense once explained but represents a genuinely difficult discovery. As apel must take an alternate route to re-enter the Engine Room from the west, since the east entrance would trigger another flag check and rearm the bombs.
This marks the first boss skip found in Metal Gear Solid 2 speedruns. The Tanker section is the only part of the game where players control Solid Snake, making this encounter his sole boss fight. Skipping it entirely is expected to reshape speedrun strategies and world records in the coming weeks.
The discovery joins a lineage of unexpected Metal Gear Solid exploits. The original Metal Gear Solid featured the "Boba Skip," which streamer Boba found and that later became standard speedrun technique, demonstrating how even well-established games can yield new optimization routes decades after release.
