Tokyo-based developer and publisher Marvelous has officially unveiled Eternal Anima, described as a legacy-driven time-travel RPG featuring a distinctive visual style likened to an HD-2D approach. Originally teased back in 2023 under the working title PROJECT LIFE is RPG, the title is scheduled to launch worldwide on March 4, 2027. It will be available across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch 2.

The narrative of Eternal Anima is set in a world covered almost entirely by ocean, where humanity has abandoned its aspirations and wisdom. Within the lone remaining city of Urbis Ael (also referred to as Urbis Ale), a strict rule is enforced: citizens must never strive for a better tomorrow. The story follows protagonist Wade, a man who goes on the run after questioning this prohibition. After using a mysterious power to relive memories and discover a world beyond the city lines, Wade is branded a heretic. He embarks on a time-travelling adventure alongside a varied group of new allies to save civilizations of the past and unravel the secrets of a lost history.

The development staff for Eternal Anima features several industry veterans. Katsuhisa Higuchi, known for Final Fantasy III and IV as well as Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, serves as director. The story concept has been crafted by Keisuke Makino of Persona 5, while Kazushige Nojima, whose credits include Final Fantasy VII, VIII, X, and Kingdom Hearts, handles scenario writing duties.

In terms of gameplay, Eternal Anima utilizes turn-based combat built around unique mechanics. Players use Wade’s powers of Psychometry to decipher memories within objects, enabling them to inherit abilities and classes from past heroes. Additionally, a Future Sight mechanic allows players to predict when and how enemies will act, letting them rewrite upcoming turns by executing actions designed to delay or cancel enemy moves. Players will venture across many continents and various time periods, with decisions made in the past carrying the potential to power up future allies.

Physical distribution plans have also been detailed for participating retailers and the Marvelous USA online store. The standard physical edition will be priced at $49.99 for PlayStation 5 and $59.99 for the Nintendo Switch 2 (which features a full cartridge). Furthermore, a physical Limited Edition will be offered at $79.99 on PlayStation 5 and $89.99 on Nintendo Switch 2, bundling a standard copy of the game alongside a two-disc soundtrack, nine character art cards with a display stand, and an art book.
