Marvel Rivals Breaks 17-Month Streak by Adding Only One Hero for Upcoming Season

NetEase has announced a significant shift in its content release strategy for Marvel Rivals, breaking a 17-month streak of adding two heroes per season. For the upcoming season, the hero shooter will feature just a single new character, Gorr the God Butcher, alongside one new map in the first half of the season. According to creative designer Guangyun Chen, the decision was made to lock crosshairs on improving the game's foundations and easing the strain that releasing multiple heroes puts on balance.

Traditionally, new characters in Marvel Rivals arrive in a powerful state due to a "fun first" approach combined with a heavy backlog of developer fixes. By scaling back the roster additions for at least half a season, the development team aims to focus on polishing existing heroes and introducing new game modes, such as the Path to Doomsday events featuring two brand-new game modes in phase 3 and phase 4. Chen has reassured the community that this single-hero update is not a permanent change or a "new normal," noting that the team has already decided on the two new heroes coming in a subsequent season.

Alongside the reduction in new characters, lead combat director Zhiyong outlined a massive list of hero changes impacting approximately 70% of the roster. Furthermore, Marvel Rivals is introducing a revamped competitive ban system for Gold 3 lobbies and above. Under the updated structure, teams will take turns banning and revealing six total heroes, and any banned hero will become unplayable for both sides for the remainder of the match to add strategic depth to the banning phase.
