Bungie has outlined Marathon's evolution beyond its original extraction shooter format, announcing a shift toward a more inclusive live service model with multiple playstyles and modes.

The studio acknowledged that Marathon "launched as a cutthroat, winner-takes-all PvEvP experience" but stated they want to "preserve that thrill for the players who enjoy it, while creating more ways for others to experience the world and find the level of challenge that works for them." This approach mirrors Bungie's experience with Destiny, expanding appeal through varied content.

A permanent PvE mode is coming in the next major update, Symbiosis, which has been delayed and will no longer follow a strict seasonal schedule. Additionally, an experimental Team Deathmatch mode will provide "a direct, lower-commitment way to sharpen your skills and compete without putting a full run at risk."

The Perimeter zone is receiving a massive visual overhaul featuring a fungus infection that will reshape the landscape with new routes and stronger visual identity. A completely new zone arrives in March alongside a social hub, described as a "CyAc-sponsored social space with a built-in firing range where players will be able to meet, prepare, test weapons and abilities, and get comfortable with their shell under ONI's watchful eye."

Bungie also revealed Bishop, the next shell character, as a "high-performance robot samurai" and "fast, surgical hunter-killer built around speed, surprise, and devastating bursts of melee damage." The studio continues supporting Destiny 2 concurrently, pledging to bring back vaulted campaigns while Marathon "needs to evolve."
