Magic Potion Games Develops Imagine Island as a Safety-Focused Successor to Club Penguin

Stephen MacDonald, a former senior manager at Disney and former head of game design and production for Club Penguin, has founded Magic Potion Games with the goal of creating a spiritual successor to the iconic online multiplayer game. The original Club Penguin operated from 2005 to 2017 and boasted over 300 million registered users at its peak before the demise of Adobe Flash forced its closure. MacDonald argues that current platforms like Roblox do not provide adequate safety measures for younger audiences, noting that children jumping straight from preschool products to open platforms face risks from interacting with adults without proper safeguards.

To address this gap, Magic Potion Games has developed Imagine Island, targeting children aged six to thirteen with a firm emphasis on live moderation and age-appropriate safety features. The company has secured backing from investors including Square Enix, 1AM Gaming, 1Up Ventures, and Konvoy Ventures, alongside guidance from industry veterans like Bungie founder Alex Seropian and Club Penguin co-founder Lane Merrifield. MacDonald's team also includes former Club Penguin colleagues Sascha Williams and Karin Johnson. Like its predecessor, Imagine Island is accessible directly via web browsers through a partnership with web-game company CrazyGames, ensuring high accessibility for players.

Since emerging from its beta phase in August, Imagine Island has accumulated over a million users without large-scale marketing expenditures. The gameplay loop involves players creating custom avatars, exploring the virtual world, participating in minigames, completing quests, and engaging in community-driven challenges. With upcoming marketing campaigns and intellectual property activations on the horizon, Magic Potion Games aims to reintroduce the safety-first design philosophy that defined the early era of children's browser-based virtual worlds.
