Indie Developer Clarifies: His Game's Voiced Character Is His Wife, Not AI
After a Steam review accused Refractive Entertainment's action-RPG Luminary of using AI voiceover, creative director Keith Kolod revealed the voice belonged to his wife on her first voice acting job. The clarification sparked broader discussion about

A player's criticism of Refractive Entertainment's recently released action-RPG Luminary sparked an unexpected public moment when the developer revealed the game's only voiced character was performed by his wife, not artificial intelligence.
Luminary launched into Steam Early Access on August 11 as a resource-gathering action-adventure sandbox with visual influences from Fable and Immortals Fenyx Rising. The game quickly earned a "Mostly Positive" rating across nearly 350 Steam reviews. However, on September 10, Steam user NyteKnyte posted a brief review after 0.4 hours of gameplay stating that while Luminary looked good, "the awful AI-generated voice killed it" for them.
Creative director Keith Kolod responded directly to the review, explaining that the voice was performed by his wife during her first voice acting experience. "While my wife might not be the greatest voice actress out there (that was her first time), I can assure you she is a real person and not AI haha," Kolod wrote. "We don't use AI at all in our game, we're just some indie game devs doing our thing with the resources we have."
Kolod later shared the review on X, questioning why people "automatically assume" every indie game voice is AI-generated simply because it lacks AAA production quality. He thanked players who had tried Luminary and praised his wife's portrayal of the Temple Guardian character.
In conversations with GameSpot, Kolod explained his reasoning for casting family members rather than exploring AI alternatives. He said voiceovers are a way to "leave parts of me, my family, and friends" in the games he makes. For the Temple Guardian role, Kolod wanted a calming, ethereal presence suggesting the character had delivered the same speech to countless players across centuries. His wife initially resisted the opportunity, feeling shy and worried she might harm the game's reception.
Kolod said the recording sessions were tense at first. "The first few takes of recording you could tell she was extremely nervous, even though it's literally just me and her at my computer and a mic. She stumbled on words, worried about all of her inflections and how certain words sounded, but with enough takes and only reading a couple sentences at a time, I thought we got a pretty decent run."
Luminary was built specifically so Kolod, his wife, and their son could play together. As a fan of Souls-like games and Elden Ring, Kolod wanted to create an action-RPG that introduced newer players to the genre without punishing difficulty. The two-person Refractive Entertainment team operates with no funding, no publisher, and no other income source, placing significant weight on the game's performance.
For his wife, lending her voice was never about pursuing professional voice acting or saving money. She participated to support her husband's success. "This was my wife's first time voice acting, she wasn't a huge fan," Kolod told GameSpot. "You know how it is: everyone hates hearing their own voice in a recording who isn't a professional. She really just helped me out of love and wanting to see me succeed with Luminary."
Despite the AI accusation, Luminary has performed strongly. Two weeks after Early Access launch, Kolod announced the game had generated over $100,000 in sales within one week, translating to approximately $70,000 in revenue after Steam's commission. The controversy surrounding the voiceover story has driven additional attention through Reddit and other platforms, though Kolod noted this visibility has not yet produced a comparable spike in sales.
Before Kolod implemented his wife's voice acting in the game, she made one request: she didn't want to hear negative feedback about her performance in reviews or on social media. "Little did she know it would turn into our biggest story," Kolod said.
