Lanterns Showrunner Discusses Season 2 Plans and Creative Direction

Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy has shared new details regarding the pre-production plans for a potential second season. According to Mundy, the creative team is currently about six weeks into laying out a season and plans to discuss the details with executives soon. Mundy noted that if a second season moves forward, the narrative will be told in a slightly different way to keep it feeling fresh while retaining characters that audiences already know and care about.

Initial expectations for the series suggested it might adopt a True Detective-style anthology format, following a different Green Lantern and new crime each season. However, comments pointing to familiar faces returning indicate that future episodes may continue with established characters rather than shifting entirely to new protagonists. Additionally, Mundy reaffirmed that DC Studios boss James Gunn did not meddle in the narrative leading up to John Stewart's appearance in the upcoming 2027 Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow.

Mundy explained that while the team knew they were establishing John Stewart's footing, they were not forced to land on any specific story points, allowing for creative freedom during development. Lanterns currently airs new episodes every Sunday on HBO and HBO Max, with ongoing discussions surrounding the show's future progress as production teams map out subsequent narrative arcs.
