Lanterns Co-Creator Discusses Potential Season 2 Plans Ahead of HBO Release

Even though the upcoming DCU series Lanterns has not yet premiered on HBO, discussions are already underway regarding a potential second season. Speaking at the premiere, co-creator Damon Lindelof addressed whether there are plans for a follow-up outing, stating that if the show proves successful and resonates with audiences, there is "a lot of runway to launch into future seasons." Lindelof also noted that Chris Mundy has already started a new writers' room to explore possible stories for a second season.

Ahead of a potential sophomore run, reports indicate that comic writer and producer Christopher Cantwell has joined as co-showrunner alongside Chris Mundy. However, it is important to note that Lanterns has not yet received an official renewal order from HBO or DC Studios. Lindelof shared that when he originally approached the project, his primary focus was the first season, describing it as a mystery with a defined beginning, middle, and end centered on characters they wanted viewers to invest in.

While details regarding a prospective second season remain under wraps, Lindelof mentioned several actors he would like to see join the cast in the future. Among them is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who previously portrayed the villain in the Aquaman films, alongside other frequent collaborators such as Regina King, Justin Theroux, and Carrie Coon.

Lanterns follows intergalactic cop Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, and his trainee John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, as they investigate a mysterious murder. The first season spans two timelines set in 2016 and 2026, and also features Kelly Macdonald as a local sheriff, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. The series is scheduled to arrive on HBO Max on August 16.
