La Vuelta Stage 3 Cancelled Due to Severe Hailstorm, Standings Remain Unchanged

Stage 3 of La Vuelta a España 2026 has been completely cancelled due to an intense hailstorm and extreme weather conditions. The cancellation occurred toward the final stretch of the race, with only 15 kilometers remaining on the climb to Font-Romeu, marking the race's first summit finish still located in France. The severity of the hail forced numerous riders to halt and seek shelter for their personal safety, and the extreme weather even caused the television broadcast signal to be lost.

"With safety the main concern, the decision was made to cancel stage 3. The race will resume on Tuesday with a 104.8 km route around Andorra la Vella," the organization announced. Tuesday's upcoming stage is scheduled to feature three Category 1 climbs alongside a final Category 3 climb heading to Alto de la Comella.

Prior to the cancellation decision, Luxembourg's Mats Wenzel representing Equipo Kern Pharma and Italy's Lorenzo Fortunato from XDS Astana Team had established a lead, sitting 20 seconds ahead of the peloton. However, because of the complete cancellation of the stage, those results were voided for the general classification, leaving the standings entirely unchanged from Stage 2. Tadej Pogacar continues to hold the overall race lead, maintaining a 9-second advantage over Wout Van Aert of Team Visma, while Matthew Brenan, also from Visma, holds third place sitting 10 seconds behind Pogacar.
