KRAFTON Cancels PUBG: Black Budget Before Launch

KRAFTON has shut down PUBG: Black Budget, an extraction shooter that peaked at nearly 10,000 concurrent players during closed alpha testing. The studio concluded the game's direction would not sustain long-term player engagement.

KRAFTON has cancelled PUBG: Black Budget, ending development of the extraction shooter before its full launch. The decision came after an internal review of the project's direction and future prospects.

In a Steam announcement, PUBG Studios stated: "After reviewing the project's development status and future direction, we concluded that its current direction would not allow us to deliver an experience players could enjoy over the long term. We have therefore made the difficult decision to end development of PUBG: Black Budget."

During closed alpha testing, Black Budget attracted nearly 10,000 concurrent players at its peak and ranked well on Steam's wishlist charts. The game fused extraction shooter mechanics with PUBG's traditional battle royale formula, positioning itself as an alternative in a crowded and competitive genre.

The extraction shooter space has proven difficult to navigate for most developers. Even established titles like Escape from Tarkov and ARC Raiders have struggled with player retention and community sentiment. Few games in the genre achieve sustained success regardless of their gameplay approach, whether focusing on PvE, hardcore PvP, or hybrid mechanics.

This marks another cancelled PUBG spin-off for KRAFTON. Earlier in 2024, the studio shut down PUBG: Blindspot after just two months in early access. The company remains developing PUBG: DED.NET, a roguelike shooter unveiled at Gamescom with a distinctive visual aesthetic.

PUBG Studios said it will carry lessons learned from Black Budget's development into future projects as it continues exploring new gameplay experiences.
