Over 85% of Japanese Game Developers Now Use Generative AI, CESA Survey Shows
A new survey from Japan's Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association reveals a sharp jump in generative AI adoption among Japanese game developers, rising from 51% in 2025 to 85.8% in 2026. The majority say they use it daily.

Generative AI adoption among Japanese game developers has surged dramatically, according to a 2026 survey by the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA). The findings show 85.8% of Japanese developers now use some form of generative AI in their workflow, up sharply from 51% the previous year.
Among those using the technology, 63% report using generative AI on a daily basis, while 22.8% use it occasionally. The survey includes major studios that are CESA members, including Capcom, Square Enix, SEGA, Konami, Koei Tecmo, and Sony.
When asked how they apply the technology, most developers indicated they avoid direct use of AI-generated assets. Instead, they described using AI models primarily to streamline production pipelines and improve efficiency. This distinction matters to developers concerned about creative integrity, though many argue that using generative AI at any stage of development raises questions about artistic authenticity, particularly given that AI models are often trained on existing works without explicit permission.
The rapid adoption reflects a broader industry trend. Generative AI's presence in video game development has sparked ongoing debate about its role in creative work. While some studios view it as a practical tool for handling repetitive tasks and accelerating workflows, critics contend that reliance on the technology undermines artistic vision and raises ethical concerns about the source material used to train these models.
The gap between 2025 and 2026 marks a significant acceleration. Industry observers will likely track whether adoption continues to climb in future CESA surveys.
