James Gunn confirms Lanterns season finale, not series finale, keeping door open for season 2

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn clarified that next week's Lanterns episode is a season finale rather than a series finale, signaling potential for a second season. Showrunner Chris Mundy revealed pre-production work is already underway.

Lanterns is wrapping its first season this Sunday, and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has clarified what fans should expect. When asked whether the finale would conclude the series or just the season, Gunn responded on Threads: "Season finale, correct."

The distinction matters for fans invested in the story. The first season has followed Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre's John Stewart as they investigated a mystery in the Nebraska town of Rushville. A central unanswered question drives the plot: who killed Hal Jordan? As of episode 7, that mystery remains unsolved.

Showrunner Chris Mundy has offered additional context about what comes next. While no official renewal has been announced, Mundy told The Hollywood Reporter that pre-production work is already underway. "The question is whether season two is a story people are interested in," Mundy said. "If that's the case, then we'll get to do another one. We'll tell it in a slightly different way, so that it feels fresh, with characters you know and care about."

Mundy added that the team is approximately six weeks into laying out a potential second season and plans to discuss the project with network leadership soon. The first season also introduced Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion, suggesting additional characters are ready for expanded roles if the show continues.

Lanterns airs weekly on HBO and HBO Max.
