Former Nintendo Boss Satoru Iwata Mandated Daily Animal Crossing: New Leaf Play for Nintendo Europe Staff

Former Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata reportedly instituted an unusual behind-the-scenes push to ensure the success of Animal Crossing: New Leaf by having every employee at Nintendo Europe play the game daily months before its official launch. Speaking on the Back Page podcast, Ashley Day, a former PR and social media manager at Nintendo UK, recalled the retrospective initiative during a discussion on the Nintendo DS.

According to Day, the directive came straight from the top. Every employee across Nintendo Europe and its subsidiaries received a free copy of New Leaf months ahead of the release date. While Nintendo employees historically received access to company games, receiving them prior to the shelf date was unprecedented. Iwata reportedly made the exception so that staff members could understand the unique charm and rhythm of the franchise.

"Iwata made a point and said, 'I want everyone, it's now your job to play New Leaf, like play it every day,'" Day noted, explaining that the late executive wanted personnel to experience what it meant to play Animal Crossing habitually. The mandate proved transformative within European operations. Day recounted that older sales staff in their late fifties who rarely touched video games became deeply invested, trading on the in-game stock market and designing custom clothing items.

While verifying the direct impact of the internal mandate on commercial success is difficult, New Leaf ultimately emerged as a massive release for the company and remains a fan-favorite benchmark for the series to this day. The retrospective also highlighted amusing anecdotes from the era, including Nintendo receiving numerous complaints from parents who felt a skin-colored gyroid item resembled inappropriate imagery.
