HBO has officially announced that It: Welcome to Derry has been greenlit for a second season following nearly ten months of radio silence since the prequel series first premiered. Alongside the renewal announcement, HBO released a brief teaser indicating that the upcoming season will take viewers back to the year 1935.

The first season of the horror show was set in 1962, aligning with the narrative premise that the entity returns to Derry every 27 years. Creator Andy Muschietti has previously outlined plans for two additional seasons, which could potentially extend further back to 1908 in a hypothetical third season. According to reports, the second season is expected to focus on the historical massacre of the Bradley Gang, a piece of lore that was touched upon during the inaugural season.

The prequel series explores the origins of the entity and its adoption of the Pennywise the Dancing Clown persona. The first season secured an 80 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, drawing a mix of positive reviews alongside criticisms regarding pacing, lore changes, and screen time for Pennywise. Creator Andy Muschietti has indicated that the upcoming episodes will delve into darker themes, incorporating real-world elements such as the Great Depression and racial injustice. As of now, HBO has not yet revealed an official release date for It: Welcome to Derry season 2.
