Hinterland Shifts Focus to The Long Dark Survival Mode as Sequel Blackfrost Development Slows

Developer Hinterland Studio has adjusted its internal focus, placing more attention on survival mode updates for The Long Dark while shifting staff away from the upcoming sequel, Blackfrost.

Developer Hinterland Studio has announced a shift in focus regarding its upcoming projects, pivoting more attention toward survival mode updates for The Long Dark. Following the conclusion of The Long Dark's story mode with the release of Wintermute's fifth and final episode earlier this year, many assumed full attention would shift toward the sequel, Blackfrost, which was announced in 2024.

According to a Steam blog post from the developer, Blackfrost has not been cancelled, but the studio has adjusted its plans. Hinterland cited changes in the games industry, including shifted business models, complicated geopolitical situations, unclear next-generation console hardware futures, and a general decline in time and money spent on new games as players turn toward familiar titles. As a result, the primary focus will rest on The Long Dark's survival mode for the next two years.

The roadmap for The Long Dark over the next two years includes continued updates, bug fixes, quality-of-life improvements, and the integration of items and maps from Wintermute's fifth episode. To support these ongoing updates, the studio plans to release paid downloadable content. While specific details remain slim, Hinterland noted that one DLC will follow a similar structure to the Tales From The Far Territory expansion pass, while another will offer a different experience.

To accommodate this renewed focus on the original game, Hinterland has shifted some internal staff members off Blackfrost to support core development and DLC work. Despite the resource reallocation, the studio still intends to share a gameplay reveal for Blackfrost before the end of the year, keeping the project on track for eventual release.
