Happy Wheels, the ragdoll physics racing game that defined browser gaming for millions, is now available on Steam after a nearly two-decade journey. Developer Jim Bonacci released the game on Valve's platform this week, surprising himself with the response.

"Moments before this release, I sit in terror looking at the 750,000 wishlists statistic," Bonacci said. "I realistically was thinking maybe 5k at best, and then maybe it would gain some momentum as it casually settles into its new environment."

The game's arrival on Steam follows Chrome's termination of Adobe Flash support in 2021, which killed countless browser-based games. Bonacci created a Javascript version in 2020 to preserve Happy Wheels beyond that extinction event. The Steam release brings the blood-soaked physics sandbox to a new audience at $5.

As a longtime Steam user and independent developer with no industry connections, Bonacci expressed gratitude for the unexpectedly warm reception. "It's both shocking and supremely welcoming to get this type of reception in the form of this absurd number two weeks after adding it to the store," he said.

The wishlists suggest significant appetite for browser gaming classics on traditional platforms. Whether the accumulated interest translates to day-one purchases remains to be seen, but the numbers point to genuine player enthusiasm for revisiting the chaotic, injury-laden racing that defined Happy Wheels' original appeal.
