Halo: Combat Evolved Now Playable in Web Browser With 128-Player Multiplayer

A developer has built a browser-based version of the original Halo: Combat Evolved that supports full multiplayer gameplay and works across Windows, Linux, and Android. The project went live recently and drew nearly 20,000 games within five hours.

A developer has successfully ported the original Halo: Combat Evolved to a web browser, complete with multiplayer support for up to 128 players. The project, built by Mitchell Hynes using decompilation work from Bnunu and a fork from team Cybersecurity, allows players to start gaming immediately after the browser downloads necessary files.

The browser version supports full mouse and keyboard controls, splitscreen co-op, and works on Windows, Linux, and Android. Players launch the site, wait for assets to load, and can jump straight into campaign missions or multiplayer lobbies. The project uses peer-to-peer servers, so players share room links to join multiplayer sessions rather than using traditional matchmaking.

Traffic from social media announcements caused the site to briefly go offline, flagged as suspected phishing before coming back online. Within five hours of launch, the project had logged nearly 20,000 games across 115 countries. The Halo subreddit has since become a hub for players creating lobbies and coordinating matches.

One Reddit player commented on the experience: "Lmao this is great. Got a couple good kills back and forth just using trackpad. I need to get back to work now but I'm excited for such a simple way to play with people."

Loading times for missions can be lengthy depending on connection speed, but gameplay runs smoothly once loaded. The audio quality matches the original. The project's legal status remains uncertain, as it offers free access to a classic title Microsoft re-released as Halo: Campaign Evolved last month.
