Tech Experts Call Grand Theft Auto 6 The Most Visually Advanced Game To Date, Which Explains Why It’s Stuck At 30FPS

Following its first big gameplay reveal, Digital Foundry experts have praised Grand Theft Auto 6 as an extremely visually impressive open-world title that targets a consistent 30 frames per second.

Following its first big gameplay reveal, Grand Theft Auto 6 has drawn high praise from technical analysis experts at Digital Foundry, who have highlighted the title's massive open-world detail and visual presentation. Oliver Mackenzie and Richard Leadbetter evaluated the recent gameplay footage, with Mackenzie describing it as the most impressive example of real-time game rendering he has ever witnessed. The technical analysis pointed out standout character rendering elements, including detailed skin textures and hair physics applied not only to the game's protagonists but also to numerous non-player characters.

The evaluation also highlighted Rockstar's use of ray tracing, noting a careful balance where ray-traced effects are implemented selectively for maximum impact alongside conventional rendering methods. Performance was another major talking point, with Digital Foundry noting that the title renders at a consistent 30 frames per second target, showing virtually no dips across thousands of analyzed frames. According to their calculations, the preview material rendered at a native 1440p resolution and was upscaled to 4K without modern machine learning upscaling techniques, leaving a slightly soft image prior to launch.

Looking ahead to hardware capabilities, Digital Foundry reaffirmed predictions that a 60 frames per second performance mode is unlikely to appear on standard current-generation consoles due to heavy CPU bottlenecks caused by the game's dense world simulation. While systems like the PlayStation 5 Pro might achieve higher resolutions or enhanced ray tracing, true performance breakthroughs may have to wait for a potential future PC release. Beyond technical performance, the gameplay preview also revealed several classic and new features, such as the return of a six-star wanted level, interactions with dogs, and an optional romance story arc.
