GTA 6 Team Refused to Compromise on Scale or Detail, Says Rockstar Co-Studio Head

Rockstar North's Aaron Garbut says the studio handled pressure on GTA 6 by expanding ambition rather than cutting corners, with detail, scope, interaction and density all increased.

Rockstar North's co-studio head Aaron Garbut has outlined how the team approached the massive expectations surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6, revealing the studio chose to expand rather than reduce scope.

When asked how player expectations shaped development, Garbut explained that pressure led the team to over-deliver across multiple dimensions. "As the pressure for us on this project is huge, we dealt with that by doing our best to over-deliver. Normally you compromise scale for detail or detail for interaction, but with this project we went the other way – everything is dialled up – detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction, and density. I don't think we have ever created anything close to this before," he said.

The comments came as part of a Game Informer cover story on the upcoming release. Garbut's statement suggests Rockstar avoided the typical trade-offs between visual fidelity, world density, and player interaction that most large-scale games face.

Grand Theft Auto 6 launches November 19 on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.
