Grand Theft Auto 6's Refuelling Action Reportedly Takes About 10 Seconds
Rockstar co-studio head Rob Nelson notes that a vehicle fill-up in Grand Theft Auto 6 takes about 10 seconds, addressing controversial simulation additions.
Grand Theft Auto 6 aims to bring players closer to real-life mechanics by introducing a vehicle refuelling system, requiring players to stop off at gas stations. This mechanical tweak has proved somewhat controversial among players who believe refuelling could interrupt the action-heavy flow of driving and shooting that the series is known for. However, Rockstar is sticking to its design choices for Vice City.
Insights into the mechanic emerged via YouTuber TGG, who viewed an extended preview of the game overseen by Rockstar co-studio head Rob Nelson. According to the preview footage, gas stations allow players to repair cars, refuel internal combustion engine vehicles, and recharge electric vehicles. Selecting the option triggers a cutscene that lasts approximately 10 seconds.
During the demonstration, Nelson observed the process firsthand, remarking, "Hey, that's pretty fast for a fill up. You can't complain about that." Despite his positive spin, Nelson also acknowledged potential community hesitation regarding the feature, asking, "Do you think people are going to like it?" and noting that the studio will monitor public reception.
Commentators have pointed out parallels to Red Dead Redemption 2, which launched in 2018 and featured its own share of simulation-heavy elements that drew mixed player reactions regarding inventory management and movement mechanics. Whether the vehicle maintenance feature in Grand Theft Auto 6 will hinder gameplay remains to be seen as players experience the open-world simulation firsthand.
